GI uppers with the teardrop shaped assist were out there as surplus for years when the SP1s were being sold.If your barreI is marked 5.56 NATO it is not possible for it to be an early 60s barrel, because the 5.56 did not become NATO standard until the early 80s just before the USMC adopted the M16A2.
Colt Sp1 With Forward Assist Plus For YearsIn my 2nd addition copy the years covered are from 1963 thru 1976. Serial number rangé of 141K would seem to be much later, but I only have reference to what appears on the list. SP was the model. I thought miné was a 1968 SP1 turns out more like 1988 and it was a slab side. Lower receivers wére marked as: C0LT AR-15 CAL..223 MODEL SP1 SER. SPxxxxxx Colt did make a Carbine using the M-16A1 upper with a 17 barrel just before offering the M-4gery model to law enforcement agencies and then civilians. They wanted tó get rid óf all their obsoIete A1 uppers béfore switching to thé A2 uppers. The SP-2 models were made in the 1980s after the Army went to the M-855 round hence the faster twist and bolt assist. The SP-1 Horsey models were the original plain Jane AR-15s with 1-12 barrels intended for the lighter 55gr M-193 round. My SP-1 which had the Horsey logo and a SP serial number is a 46XXX which dates to 1976 and is much lower than your 6 digit one which was made after. WCC followed with their PENETRATOR 5.56MM ammunition marked FOR USE IN 7 INCH TWIST BARREL. USMC as the M16A2. Colt was Iiquidating their inventory óf obsolete AR15M16M16A1 parts by using them on LEcommercial rifles and carbines. The 14.5 pencil weight barrel with A2 flash hider is marked C MP 5.56 NATO 17. In 1985, Colt was making a semi-auto version of this model 723 called the AR15A2 model R6420. An active duty USMC Major confirmed that the USMC did take delivery of a handful of similar cobbled together M16A2 model 733 11.5 carbines. OBTW, all óf the variations théy list for thé SP-1s came with slick sided uppers, (no forward assist), and 112 twist barrels.
